crawling on the eastside

So after all of last weeks shenanigans, its was time for a little fun. A was in the eastside culture crawl. It was a really good time. I think that she enjoyed it and had fun with it but it was a very long weekend.

She even managed to sell a few things. Not much really to say other than it was nice to finally meet all of her other studio mates and that the show was great. here are a few pictures.

Another thing...i have noticed that my visit counter went from just under 10,000 hits up to over 16,000 in less than a week. it lead me to believe that there is some sort of malfunction with the hit counter or someone is pumping up my stats. it took me almost two years to get to 10,000 and less than a week to get another 6,000?! it doesnt make sense!

The next day

Well, I talked to Ed today. He did nothing to take ownership of what occurred and offered nothing but excuses and bad reasons on why he did what he did. I told him that when he said that he was going to be around 4-430, that sounded like an appointment to me. He countered by saying that he was there by 4. I told him

'I dont think so. We were home by quarter to 4. Also when we listen to the playback of the message, it said that it was received at 332.'

He response was something muttered under his breath about 330, 4 its all the same.

I asked about the toilet and then he said that it was just surface mold and we should take care of it. He then told me how to clean the mold for 5-7 minutes. The whole time I was thinking that there is no way that this is normal looking mold and this guy is an idiot.

From now on the less I have to deal with the yahoo, the better.

I am going to take care of it myself and thats that. I do have the option of taking it to the health unit and having them to inspect it and then they put the pressure on the landlord but how far do i really want to take it? I do like living here and its in a great location...

also if you are ever in the market to buy a place...i would steer clear of royal lepage and any agent with the name ed or laura...

He's A Ping Pong Playa...Baby

Last night I tried to connect with my Asian Heritage. I went to the Vancouver Asian Film Festival and saw two really fun movies.

The first movie was a short film on Harvey Lowe, the worlds first YO-Yo Champion. It was a great insightful movie that really connected with because he has a similar story to my grandparents. I also have the feeling the my grandmother knows this man because I have heard his name before!

The Feature film was called Ping Pong Playa! This is the film that really connected with my roots!
Little did you know, but I was destined to become a master of table tennis until that accident that shall remain unspoken of!

It was a fun comedy that was full of humor and it was also great to see Chinese characters depicted as normal member of Western society, not the regular math geeks stereotype. The movie played on a lot of those stereotypes and had fun with them. I had a great time watching the film and highly recommend it to anyone.

On another note. We have had some mold issues in our new place. It is mostly caused by poor air circulation and we have taken steps to change that. I spent a weekend two weeks ago cleaning all of the window sills with a mixture of bleach and water. More air gets to the windows, we shut the door to the bathroom and if we airdry clothing, we open a window. This has seem to taken care of the window mold.

The reason that I wrote about this is because we found an incredible amount of mold underneath the water tank part of the toilet. It is some thing that isnt normal and needed to be addressed. I called the landlord about this issue and arranged a meeting time of 4. Ed called back and left a message to A's phone that he would be around between 4-430. We had a birthday party to attend in the afternoon and got home around 345. When we got home we found that one of the couches had been pulled out from the wall, my office chair was on the otherside of the room and some picture frames in the bedroom were pulled from the resting spot on the wall as well.

All of this was very strange. A listened to her phone and sure enough Ed left a message on her phone at 330 saying that he went into our place and looked around and saw no evidence of mold.He then proceeded to give a five minute lecture/message that we live in a rain forest and the it is moist. Mold is something that we all have to deal with. Because I mentioned the bathroom, he said that he looked extra closely around in there and saw nothing. he also proceeded to tell us that we have too much furniture and too much clothing in the closets.

'If you are taking about the staining on the bath tub tiles, my goodness, thats nothing some good scrubbing cant take care of'

Ed, it wasnt the bathtub you twit, it was the toilet like I mentioned in the original message.

I dont want to rant anymore but the overall tone of his message was that we were complaining about nothing and that he was scolding us like little children. He was making judgements and assumptions about us and our stuff without even talking to us. He arrived early and didnt attempt to contact us to see if it was okay to enter our place. he just entered with out permission. I know my rights and I know that the landlord can not enter without 24 hours prior notice unless it is an emergency. believe me, this was no emergency! If I can figure out a way to make an mp3 of his message i will and post it.

On a final note. The landlady that we have normally dealt returned my call and began to scold me that unless it was an emergency, she doesnt want to be contacted on the weekend. she has 300 tenents and doesnt want to called. she gave me the same lecture about we live in a rainforest, she has mold and has to clean it up to and that ed told her that we have too much furniture and clothing. everytime i tried to tell her that i was unhappy with the way it was handled and that ed was unprofessional in the way he communicated with us, she would cut me off and tell me that she didnt want to deal with non-emergencies on the weekend. finally she told me to call the office and leave a message for ed and he'll call me when he has the time.

I am sorry for calling you laura. I thought that when someone illegally enters your apartment, you are entitled to say something about it to the landlord!

You tell me if this is normal mold and i should clean this with 1% bleach and water!

Show Me Your...MADGE!

Well...100 posts...I honestly didnt think that I would make it this long! Who woulda thunk it!

Anyways, my story that I wanted to tell. On any normal day, I am awaken to Jack FM coming onto the radio. Most days I hope that Livin On A Pair will wake me up. This time, I was woken up to the news that there was more Madonna tickets on sale for the show. I sprung outta bed and ran to computer and bought me some tix!

So the show...Madonna didnt get on stage until 915 but she did manage to entertain 55,000 people with a two hour set. She played a lot of her fav songs and remixed or redid a lot of them too! She definetly puts on an awesome show. I would say that it was worth it for sure...I have some pics that I need to get off my phone and then I will post them!

One last thing...I saw some of the dirtiest looking 40 year olds ever. I think they reliving 1986 but without their 1986 charm!

Big Changes

Like the title implies, there have been some big changes over here. First off, I would like to acknowledge that it has been a long time without a blog post but maybe I can be excused for it!

So what has happened to me (that sounds funny doesnt it?)

- I am now a full time teacher in Vancouver. No more of this subbing stuff, at least for now! Although I am a two different schools, it is nice to know that I am going to the same place and see the same kids everyday! Now as long as I dont show up at the wrong school...

- I have moved to a different apartment. The old place was beginning to look more and more of a dump. And it didnt help that there was a crazy lady in need of some serious help who was terrorizing us. Lets say that she has quite the imagination!

- I got a new phone...not as exciting...but its an expensive phone that i got for a lot cheaper and no its not the iphone...my gf got that one...jealous...maybe a tad bit!

-finally, my knee has been f'ed. i cant straighten it and its in some serious need of some serious help. I am going to physio on wednesday. Hopefully something promising will occur there!

I suppose that those are the major events that have been taking up my time...

Stone Temple Pilots and my 1996 flashback

Well to mark the end of summer, a friend of mine and I went to see Stone Temple Pilots last night at GM Place. It was remarkable how much these guys look exactly like they did in 1996. If you took a picture and from then and took one now and put them side by side, you wouldnt know the difference.
I was worried that the band would sound like shit or that they would show up super late. But neither happened so that was really good. It was a rockin show and the people there showed up to show their love for the band.

Overall I liked the show and I heard all the songs I wanted to see. It was obvious that Scott Weiland loves being a rock star. His movement around the stage was straight outta the Mick Jagger playbook. And the bassist ____ Deleo, was staight outta the how to look like a rock star on an arena stage playbook. But with that said, I really enjoyed the show and was glad to at least see them once in my life!

On another note....school starts on the other side of this very weekend...wow...the summer went fast...i suppose that the weather was telling us its time to go back though!

'Rain down on me' - Radiohead in Raincouver

Radiohead played tonight at T-Bird Stadium. This would be the 3rd or 4th time that I have managed to see them play. I have never been disapointed with the show that they put on!

I think that it was the first time that I had ever gone to a sold out show their. It was a very rainy night but that didnt stop the awesomeness. It was a good time and they played loads of songs from pretty much their whole catalog. The light show was great,

the banter was fun and the crowd was pretty into it. the only thing is i wish that i was able to get a radiohead water bottle. sold out quickly! all in all, i am really glad that i made it out to the show, even if we missed the first song trying to get their! If you ever get the chance go!

LIVE NATION LICKS BIG ONES but the music was awesome

As you can tell by the title of this particular blog, I was really not that happy with Live Nation, the promoters of the Pemberton Music Festival. I was going to write this really long and drawn out blog about how bad the festival was. But this is what I am going to do...only complain a little.

The GOOD:

- The Lillooet Nation playing traditional songs at the end of Sunday after Coldplay
- NIN
- Tom Petty
- Jay Z....amazingly good...best of the weekend
- Black Mountain
- Interpol
- Coldplay
- NERD
- Death Cab For Cutie
- Sam Roberts Band (the two songs a actually got to see!)
- My Morning Jacket
- the fact that I got to stay in Whistler instead of the crap hole known as tent city
- i found my cousin on the last day after searching for two whole days
- the family that let us park on their lawn for free b/c some let them park on their lawn in Florida and she really wanted to screw the promoter
- i'll add anything i can think of later...

The Bad:

- the Hip...started strong...then Gord just stared to yell alot
- the Barcadi tent had three hour lineup...that meant no Chromeo, DJ Shawdow...etc
- Parking was an hour walk away from the site
- RCMP didnt do much to help the traffic situation

The Ugly:

- the lack of proper organization
-the fact that the papers said it was not as bad as it was...
- the average of 4 hours in traffic
- you could catch a shuttle for the airport/parking to the site without having to push people out of your way
- LIVE NATION
- $7 pepsi's
- that lack of training for the poor volunteers
- the lawlessness that was going on

But other than all of that...it will take a lot for me to go to this thing again...I will be going to the Whistler Music Festival instead...thats if they have another one again...I heard no one was at that one b/c everyone was poor from buying tickets for Pembie....

BUT the music saved the show...live music will always out trump shitty everything else...

Well actually whistler but you know what i am talking about. you dont...get your head checked out. we went to get the wristbands last night but it was over an hour wait and we said f that. the line wasnt moving and i hope that wasnt an indication of the lack of foreplanning that will come our way this weekend. i will post either during or after this first time event...

FOC

On the weekend, a bunch of us went down to see the Sub Pop 20th anniversary concert at Merrymoor Park in Redmond Wa. It was a 2 day event but what we really wanted to see was Flight of the Conchords. I know that I have professed my love for them and that I think that they are great fun. I have proclaimed a liking for the tv show and even their cd.

Saturday was a scorcher in Seattle, epescially the hour wait at the usually quiet Huntington crossing. Anyways the jist of the story (because I dont want to write anything too long) is this. We hung out down by Lake Union, went for a little swim, ate a super crazy delish Thai place in the Freemont district and then off to the concery. I didnt know that Redmond was about 30 minutes away from Seattle. LAME! Long drive because the fast way bridge was shut down. So we get their find some sweet parking (ie. free) and head on in.

We saw the last two acts of the night. Iron and Wine was playing. Actually it was just the lead singer. He covered Such Great Heights. Very fun. Finally the whole reason for the trip came to stage. Flight of the Conchords was good even if it was a short 40 minute set. they were fun had good banter with the crowd and even dealt with the dude who through his white/used boxers on stage. glad we went!

On sunday we hung around the freemont disctict again...go there...and green lake...the lost lagoon of Seattle. It was a nice way to see Seattle actually...so there is more than downtown and key arena!

pc...pemberton in less than two weeks!

Summa Time

So school is finally out. I am always amazed at how fast the year seems to go by. But really should I be? Time is always the same and another school year has passed. The beauty of being a school teacher is that I get this time off. I have effectively taken the last week off. By that I mean that I have done absolutely nothing. Nada. And now I am bored...time to get some new hobbies, read that book I bought during spring break. maybe even blog a little bit more! Seems like people are looking at it a bit more...or maybe its the same people always looking at it!

Today was the best tennis match that I have ever seen. I slept in today and figured I go to tsn.ca and look at the result. To my surprise, the match was rained delayed in the fifth set two games apiece and tied 30-30. Okay...lets watch. What I saw was truly an amazing battle between two so evenly matched players. Nadal was coming off his French title win (where he dominated) and Federer was the world number one and on top of that, he hadnt lost at Wimbleton since 2001. The match went over five hours with about 4 and half hours of actual playing time. Nadal finally pulled out the win with a 9-7 win in the final set. Amazing win...is this the changing of the guard or is Federer going to come back to his former glory?

On another tanget...anyone who knows are plight the last few months with questionable landlords and downstairs tenents...well... i dont know but it seems to be firing up again...first sign, the note that says 'Leave My Cats Alone!'...second sign...lady downstairs yelling and landlord "Leave my f'in cats alone...dont f with them'...cue slammed door!

OH GREAT!

Its a Spain Thang

I just got back from watching the final of Euro 2008. It pitted Spain vs Germany. I have to say that it was a very entertaining tournament. Overall the quality of the action was very hi and very fun to watch. Of course there were some snoozers of games but overall it was good fun.

I was lucky enough to watch the game at a friends place who had HD. Why dont I have that sorted out in my own life yet?

The game wasnt too bad. The first part of the game was boring...both teams feeling each other out, seeing where things would lead! Then Spain a fantasic goal from Fernando Torres. A really beauty! The stuff happened...Ballack got some staples in the face...a yellow here...a yellow there...by the end of the game Germany gave up and it was pretty much Spains game for the taking and thats what they did.

Congrats to Spain for winning in style!

Reunionized

Last night was my hs 10 year reunion. I have to like most, it was a better experience than i thought it was going to be. I wasnt really sure what to expect. Some one i know, at her reunion there was all kinds of stuff going on. People brought their new borns (not that weird) who were next to the girl dirty dancing on the piano. And there was also a group who decided to rent a hotel room and everyone had a 'neat' experience with each other.

So who knows what was going to happen at our reunion. Well nothing much. There was what you would expect. you have a conversation with this person, the same conversation with that person and so on. You know its time to move on when there is that awkward pause when both of you are trying to think of something to say but dont have anything else to contribute and you excuse yourself to the washroom or get another drink.

Thank being said, it was a good time and it was nice to those conversations with people before things got awkward!

good luck to all those grads and wish that some of the other ones made it out!

also i dont have any pics...i figured someone would take care of it!

on a side music note...

1. just got the new coldplay...not bad...only listen to it once...but i first impression is more of the same, so if you like coldplay, which i do...get it. by far the best album cover of the year!

coldplay-viva la vida

2. Girl Talk...i dont know much about them but i do know that they are trying the whole radiohead pay as you want system. I decided to give it a try and i do like there music. It is a mash up of all kinds of music and its pretty sweet but it comes with a warning. you must crank it up to appreciate it...

girl talk-play your part pt. 1

pc...until the next reunion (or maybe a little sooner)

ps...also euro 2008 has been pretty awesome...check out bobby mcmahons blog...the link is posted further down my page...he has good review/analysis of the games and a quote of the day...thats the best part of my day...reading that quote...

Trevor Linden retires

Well...I knew that this day was going to come but I suppose like so many other Canuck fans, we didnt believe that it would. I know that I have blogged about this before on the last day of the Canucks regular season but I am still in shock about the fact that there will be no more Trevor Linden. He was one of my idols growing up and still is. I wanted to be like him.

My one everlasting hockey fantasy was Trevor and I would be going on a 2 on 1 in the old Coliseum, he would pass to me, I would fake and then pass back and he would tap it into an empty net for the game winner.

I will also never forget the cup run of 94. Him and Captain Kirk were unbelievable. I also remember that my friend Al was able to predict the games results and he called every game of the playoff run. Damn him for predicting game 7 correctly!

I would like to say thank you so much to the only Canuck Captain in my heart. I still have my Linden for Rookie of the Year button too!

A New Day

Today I browsed the Arsenal website and came across this. Its the new first choice jersey for the Gunners. I have to say that at first glance, it is not the greatest but its not the worst either. I know that it will grow on me and that I will want to own one. ha! I still think the one that they wore the past two seasons are the best ones that they have ever had. I suppose thats why I am hesitant about the new one.

One a side but somewhat related note. Euro 2008 has started. The only really cracker of a game was Holland 3 Italy 0. I like that final. I am not a fan of Italian football. France bored to a draw. Honestly that is the team that I am cheering for. They have some of my favorite past Arsenal players of all time, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieria. Oh Spain just scored on the Ruskies 2 nill. Thats it for now.

Hockey Night Horro

The theme song to Hockey Night In Canada on the CBC has now left the building. Who ever runs the show over there should be fired. It seems a little weird that next hockey season, Saturday nights wont run with same sound. Idiots!

And it was also announced that TSN will now have the song. It all seems wrong...CBC has the tradition, so it needs the traditional song. TSN is the new boy on the block...therefore they should have a new song, not the other way around. I feel the same way about this as I do about the dark jersey's being the home jersey's! I hate it!!!

On another note...Canada finally gets the iphone. Ships on July 11th...finally....

Glowin In the Dark

Last night I went to the spectacle that was the Glow In The Dark tour featuring Kanye West, Rihanna, NERD and Lupe Fiasco. It was quite the show I have to admit. There was about 20, 000 screaming people crammed into Gm Place with their Kanye look a like sun glasses and neon shirts.

First up was Lupe Fiasco. I dont know much about him but the chicks in front of us where going going crazy for him, so he must of been pretty good. His rhymes were good and he got the crowd off to a good start. (no pic, cell camera pic didnt turn out too well)
  1. The Coolest
  2. Go Go Gadget Flow
  3. Paris, Tokyo
  4. Hello/Goodbye
  5. Little Weapon
  6. Hip-Hop Saved My Life
  7. Streets On Fire
  8. Fighters
  9. Day Dreamin'
  10. Kick, Push
  11. Superstar
Next up was NERD. For those who dont know who that is. It is Pharrell's band with Neptunes partner Chad Hugo ( who i dont think that i saw). There were loud and full of energy. They had two drummers and a video screen and had the crowd hyped. I have been a huge neptunes fan for a long time. I love how the produce tracks by using real musicians and not synth. I thought that they were on and it was awesome to see one of the world's largest producers play. Also the best part of the night was when they brought chicks from the crowd to dance on stage. They were doing things that I am sure theirs mom's would of been proud of...as if...any ways, one of them fell of the stage while dancing and all Pharrell could say while singing was, 'oh sh!t, oh sh!t'

01 - Anti-Matter
02 - Babydoll
03 - Brain
04 - Spazz
05 - Everyone Nose
06 - She Wants To Move
07 - Rock Star
08 - Lap Dance
09 - Interlude (Drum-Off)
10 - Seven Nation Army (White Stripes Cover)

The Last of the opening bands was Rihanna. I suppose that she is probably the largest female artist in the world right now. She had some interesting costumes and she is very attractive. I dont know her too well other than her radio hits. The best part of the opening artist is that you heard only the hits and that really gets the crowd going. She definitely had the crowd singing and dancing for her. Again lots of energy and kept the crowd going strong for the main act. Also she did a medley of a MIA song and a Lauryn Hill song.

  1. Breakin' Dishes
  2. Paper Planes (MIA)/ Doo Wop (Lauryn Hill)
  3. Break it Off
  4. Shut Up and Drive
  5. SOS
  6. Hate That I Love You
  7. Unfaithful
  8. Don't Stop the Music
  9. Umbrella
Okay, so now the main act. it was already a long night and finally we got to see Kanye. I would have to say that his show was very cool. It was more like a rap opera or a performance piece. It had a concept and theme. It was something that I had never seen before. He had a huge dance stage and he basically was a solo show. No dancers to mix the scene up, just pure Kanye. Good show...well worth it.
